How does it work ?
Memory Card Memory card reader Digital camera --> computer link (plug)
Operation of transfer

The method consists in connecting the device by putting it in position of transfer (the button varies according to the device) and the computer with a cable without removing the card memory of the device. Please, don't forget to install the driver so that the computer "recognizes" your device which will appear as a new disc in my computer or in the explorer.

The transfer by cable

The simplest of all and the most spread) is a connection by cable between the device and the computer. In still not enough close past, the transfer was made via the serial port (or RS232) ofthe computer, this type of transfer being rather slow and helpful to disconnect one peripheral (generally the modem) of the computer.
The resolution of devices and files images which they produce increasing, devices use now mainly the USB bay (which is present on all the computers dating less than 2 years). The USB bay presents numerous advantages: the speed and the ease of connection among others.

The transfer via a reader of card ( the most practical )

It consists in removing the card memory of the camera and in inserting it into a reader adapted to the size of the card,
This reader who can remain connected there to the computer (as in the case of the device, please, install the driver of the reader on your computer.
The advantage is evident: more button to be selected on the device, the economy of the energy of the device which remains available for the other photos during the transfer and the speed and the simplicity of the transfer ( USB)

These readers have or the shape of a small mouse ( sandisk ) or a floppy disk ( Flashpath) into which one inserts the card memory (they exist for the majority of the format of cards). Their price strongly fell (from 90 €) and it's not useless to invest(su in one of these readers if you treat many images.

Some of these readers are the same universal because they allow to read all the sizes of cards memory existing let's quote Imation Flash-go for 90 €
Or Dane-Elec (both Compact Flash and Smartmédia) for 74.70 €.

There's also adapter PCMCIA for laptops.

Other readers exist, but are less spread.

Other modes of transfer

Other modes of transfer (floppy disks, CD) need no cable, or reader.
These supports being legible directly by the PC. IBM's micro-drive requires when to him a compatible reader CFII and stay generally on the device (transmission by cable)
